Schoeller Arca Systems solutions
Thinking outside the bag: an innovative use for the foldable large container
At the end of the nineties, Schoeller Arca Systems started a project to utilise its experience with the foldable large container which, until then, had mostly been used in the automotive segment. The team in the “Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) project” soon identified the fruit juice and concentrate segment as an area where a large foldable storage box or plastic container would considerably improve existing packaging methods.
Our systems solutions & 57 varieties of good ideas
In the beginning of 2000, SA Systems and Heinz teamed up to develop a 1000 litre foldable IBC for handling different types of concentrated tomato products. These include tomato sauce, paste and dips. Heinz, which had been using wooden bins for 20 years, had previously tried a variety of prototypes made from different materials. None had proved to be both cost effective and strong enough. However, our storage box, the all-plastic IBC, proved to meet the criteria. It is also extremely hygienic, another requirement in the food and beverage industry.
Heinz and Schoeller Arca Systems started a 12-month development and test period to try out the new IBC design. At the end of the test period, a carefully calculated cost analysis proved that the change from wood to our IBC would pay off in a short period of time. The storage box, due to its lightweight plastic design, also proved to be a faster, more efficient way of storing and transporting fresh tomato produce from the distribution centre to the end user.
The IBC works storage box with a disposable liner bag, which is placed inside the plastic container and filled with liquid. This provides a safe, hygienic method of storing liquids, with no mess or contamination.
