Fluid handling: The fruit and vegetable concentrate industry
Extracting the essence
Many kinds of fruits and vegetables destined for industrial use are produced all over the world. The most widely used in the food industry are tomatoes, oranges, grapefruits, lemons, apples, pears, pineapples, peaches, apricots and carrots. When ripe, fruit is harvested and brought to a processing plant, to be transformed into a juice, puree or paste. The finished product is poured into an aseptic storage box, made from plastic, or stored in chilled or frozen condition. Once processed, fruit concentrates and juices are often stored for over 12 months before being sent to a food or beverage company for further processing.
Fruits and vegetables can only be grown during a particular season and harvested over a short period, when they reach optimum maturity. So in this sector, the limited time available to harvest, process and store the product, combined with its perishability, means that speed and hygiene are essential. Storage boxes, plastic being the most hygienic material when used in the fluid handling industry, help speed up the logistics process.
Many of our plastic packaging products are ideally suited for fluid handling. The storage box, as the plastic used is food contact approved, ensures the highest standards of hygiene. Plastic also has rounded corners, which reduce the accumulation of dirt and prevent product residue from becoming trapped in the container.
Our IBC products are used with a disposable, sterile liner bag, which is placed inside the container and filled without allowing air to mix with the product. This means that the product is protected against external damage and oxidation. This packaging system dramatically reduces costs compared to traditional storage box alternatives, such as those made from wood, rather than plastic. It also simplifies handling throughout the logistics process and provides safe and hygienic storage and transportation of liquids.
With capacities of up to 1000 litres, an IBC storage box made from 100% plastic can even store powder and granules, making it extremely versatile. Totally, recyclable, it is smooth for ease of cleaning, ensuring the highest standards of hygiene and safety.
The most well-known companies operating in this sector include household brand names like Heinz, Unilever, Campbells and Tropicana.
